Obituary of Russell Stover Detweiler

Russell S. Detweiler, 97, a 63 year resident of Abington, PA, died Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Rydal Park , Rydal, PA. He was the husband of the late Mabel Clymer Detweiler who died in 2005. They were married May 30, 1941. Born on March 3, 1916 in Hatfield, PA, he was the son of the late Isaac Crouthamel Detweiler and Ella Mae (Stover) Detweiler. He graduated from Hatfield High School in 1934 and was a 1938 graduate of Penn State University College of Chemistry and Physics. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a chemist for Refined Syrups and Sugars, Inc. at Wall St. in New York City and in Yonkers, NY for three years before going to work for Rohm and Haas Chemical Company at their Bridesburg Philadelphia plant as a chemical engineer in 1941. He retired in 1981. He was credited with many achievements in production, development, cost reduction, quality improvement, safety, and environmental matters. Mr. Detweiler was an Abington Township Commissioner representing Ward 7 for 12 years (1967-1979). He was a member of Abington Presbyterian Church for 63 years. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. After he retired, he and Mabel traveled by car to all 48 contiguous state capitals, every Presidential Birthplace and every Presidential Library. He is survived by two children, Marilyn Splete of Damascus, MD and Doris Ormsby or Newark, DE, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
