Madlyn Burtis

Obituary of Madlyn Cline Burtis

Please share a memory of Madlyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Madlyn Virginia Cline, 98, of Willow Grove, PA passed away on August 12, 2018 at Jefferson Health Hospice at Warminster. She was the beloved wife of the late Paul Burtis.

Born in Middletown, MD to Harry T. and Oneida S. Cline on October 8, 1919, Madlyn moved with determination from her life as a small town 'farm girl' to Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD where she graduated with a B.A. in Home Economics. She worked briefly at Loats Orphanage in Frederick, MD, teaching young girls how to become skilled homemakers.

Frequently moving far from her farming roots to be with her husband and growing family, Madlyn was always known as a meticulous homemaker, devoted wife and mother and cheerful friend and neighbor. After raising her children, her lifelong love of cooking and church blossomed into a 32 year career when she became Head of Food Services for the Abington Presbyterian Church, a job that brought her great joy.

Retiring in 2001, Madlyn filled her days working outdoors, enjoying grandchildren, watching Phillies games and keeping her mind as active as possible. She was an amazing strong, proud and independent woman who touched many people throughout her life. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving are a daughter Nancy Prescott of Old Saybrook, CT, a son Tom Burtis and his wife Peg of Doylestown, PA, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her eldest daughter Judy Lally and her husband Patrick, her brother Marlowe Cline and her sister-in-law Jean Burtis.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the wonderful friends, neighbors, doctors and caregivers who provided special care and support to Madlyn and family during this time.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 29, 2018, Abington Presbyterian Church, Old York and Susquehanna Roads, Abington.  A reception will follow the service.
